यदि Collective Noun से सामूहिक रूप का बोध होता है, तो उसके साथ Singular verb का प्रयोग होता है, और यदि वह भिन्न - भिन्न व्यक्तियों में विभाजित हो जाता है, तो उसके साथ Plural verb का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे - Committee, Jury, Government, etc.
(1) The committee were one on this point. (Incorrect)
The committee was one on this point. (Correct)
(2) The committee was devided on one point. (Incorrect)
The committee were devided on one point. (Correct)
Rule - 6
कुछ nouns देखने में Plural लगते हैं, लेकिन इनका प्रयोग singular number में होता है। जैसे - Civics, Economics, Physics, Mechanics, Mathematics, News, Innings, etc.

(4) The news of his death are not true. (Incorrect)
